It’s time for this week’s Song Title Challenge.
Write a short piece of fiction, around 300 words, using the song title as your story title but don’t listen to the song. You can pick your own genre or use the one suggested to me. Remember to link back to this post so I can find yours.
If you would like to suggest a song title for a future post, you can do so from the challenge page. You can also leave a suggestion on the Facebook page.
This week’s song is Fractal Zoom by Brian Eno and the genre is Horror/Thriller. Thanks once again to bumblepuppies for the suggestion.
Fractal Zoom
You are plunging downwards, or it could be upwards…no way to tell, really. You have lost all sense of time since you fell into the pattern, though it does seem as if it now takes longer to progress from one level to the next than it had at first. Or you could be going faster.
As another layer of the fractal zooms past you, you become aware of another presence in here with you. How is that even possible, you think. Then you consider that you’re falling through a mathematical construct you created on your computer.
Your computer. Could it be a virus? Maybe that’s what caused this…this insanity. Or a hacker. Whatever it is, there’s something in here with you.
You shout into the void. No answer. You can feel it watching you. Stalking you. You need to get out of here.
You will yourself to slow down. To your surprise it works. The pattern slows down and come to a stop. You see it extend into infinity in either direction. You try to move laterally. No. Only up or down. But which is which? You could be going deeper as easily as getting out.
You start moving what you think is up. Faster and faster you will yourself.
Something flashes across the emptiness ahead of you and you come to a sudden stop. You try moving up again, but your way seems to be blocked. You will yourself down, but you can’t go that way either.
You look down at a sudden pressure on your ankle and see shiny black talons holding on to you.

I’m trying to decide if it’s cheating for you to use “zooms” instead of “zoom.” I’ll be nice this time I suppose even though you didn’t provide a link to the song. It doesn’t even have any offensive lyrics in it!

My internet is terribly slow, so I can’t get the Youtube video to load, otherwise I would have. I think the connection issue is why the post didn’t publish right either. I’ll try adding it today if I can get the internet to play nice.
Yeah, I cheated. I could probably have managed it if I used the infinitive or something, but this one was hard 😉

Oh come now. Since when do I give you difficult song titles?

I could reply to that, but there are high school kids reading this blog 😀

Thanks for the heads up. The one time I don’t go check the post on the actual blog after publishing…
Apparently WordPress doesn’t like today’s story and decided to post last week’s again. Fixed now.
