Some Christmas goodies

Some Christmas goodies

As I’ve said before, I enjoy giving people gifts for Christmas. There’s just something about finding that perfect gift for someone, and seeing their face light up when they open it. I like giving presents, but I also like getting them, and this year had a few good ones.

Grown-ups can’t play with Legos anymore. (Okay, we can, but people frown on it. Also, they’re so expensive I can never justify buying them for myself. I can’t wait till Squishy is old enough that I can buy him or her Legos so I can play with them.)

Lucky for me, my family has discovered Nano Blocks. They’re like Legos, but less than a quarter in size, meaning they’re way too delicate for clumsy kid fingers to play with. They’re adult toys…ahem…collectibles.

May the 4th be with you

May the 4th be with you

Happy Star Wars Day, all you Jedi Masters and Sith Lords out there.

I must confess, much like last year the day sneaked up on me again. But that doesn’t mean I’m leaving you empty-handed. Thanks to the wonder that is the interwebs, I give you Origami Yoda, the newest member of my writing cheerleading squad with his well-known maxim:

Origami Yoda on a Writer's Block
Write. Or write not. There is no try.

If you want to take a shot at folding one yourself, here’s a video, but be warned, it will confound you and try you and leave you bleeding from a thousand-and-one paper cuts.

In honour of Star Trek and Star Wars fans bashing on each other (personally I stay out of that fight – like Harry Dresden’s apprentice, Molly, I believe it’s okay to like both), here’s a video on how Star Trek (the reboot) should have ended. The really good bit is at two minutes, thirty seconds.

Enjoy your Star Wars Day, whichever side of the force you serve.

And live long and prosper 😛

Song Title Challenge #55: Listen to the Math by Tokyo Police Club

It’s time for this week’s Song Title Challenge.

Write a short piece of fiction, around 300 words, using the song title as your story title but don’t listen to the song.  You can pick your own genre or use the one suggested to me.  Remember to link back to this post so I can find yours.

If you would like to suggest a song title for a future post, you can do so from the challenge page.  You can also leave a suggestion on the Facebook page.

This week’s song is Listen to the Math by Tokyo Police Club and was suggested by mikiren at Jump Into the Fog.  No genre was supplied.  As always comments and critiques are welcome.

May The Force be with you

The interwebs inform me that today is International Star Wars Day.

Normally, I’d make something of a day like this (if you don’t believe me, just check out my post on last year’s International Talk Like A Pirate Day), but I spent all of today driving and frankly, my brain is mush.  So, I’ll make a big thing of the day next year.

But for now, don’t give in to the dark side, join me in pondering what to get a wookie for Christmas if he already owns a comb, when going through automatic doors, pretend you’re using the force to open them (unless you can actually, you know, use the force), and don’t you dare leave any snide comments about ewoks – they rock!

Go check out the wife’s cool pic of Yoda, enjoy The PianoGuys’s own take on lightsaber duels, and…

Update:

I just had to share this as well.  I somehow keep managing to pick my favourite characters with these things.  Click the image to take the quiz yourself.

Song Title Challenge #30: What Can You Get A Wookie For Christmas (When He Already Owns A Comb)

It’s time for this week’s third and final Song Title Challenge.

After my call last week for some Christmassy songs I got three suggestions.  I decided that today, just because it’s almost Christmas, I’m going to treat you with all three.  That’s right, three stories based on Christmas-related songs in one day.  You’re welcome.

Today’s final song is What Can You Get A Wookie For Christmas (When He Already Owns A Comb) from the album Christmas in the Stars produced by Meco Monardo and RSO records.  It was suggested by the wife who didn’t give a genre, but there really was only one choice.  Hat tip to mr George Lucas for inventing these wonderful characters.

The song’s at the end.  You’ve got to listen to this one! 😀
