The Minion is turning two next week! Can you believe it? I can’t. I really can’t.
As one does in these situations, we held a party. One can’t have a party without cake, and this time around the theme was Puffin Rock. Don’t know what that is? It’s the most adorable animated series on Netflix about a little girl puffin and her brother and all their little animal friends. The Minion loves it – we’ve watched the entire series right through twice already – so naturally that was chosen as the theme.
I thought last year’s cake was wonderful, but this time the wife outdid herself. I’ll let the pictures tell the story from here, but I’ll just add that everything was made from scratch, even the rainbow cookies (okay, so we bought some ready-made fondant icing, but when it ran out the wife quickly made some extra from scratch as well – the woman is incredible!)

Today is the missus and my wedding anniversary. The grandparents are in town, taking care of the niece and nephew while the in-laws are scuba diving in Mozambique, so we dropped the Minion off with them so we could go and watch The Incredibles 2.
Yes. The irony of dropping our toddler off at her grandparents so we can go see a kids movie is not lost on me.
There are a lot of things I liked about The Incredibles 2: Jack-Jack, The Incredibile, Jack-Jack, raccoon-wrestling, Jack-Jack, Auntie Edna, Jack-Jack, pew-pew laser eyes, Jack-Jack… What? There are five of him at one point!
Today marks nine years the wife has been putting up with me…or have I been putting up with her? Depends who you ask, I guess…
I’m lucky to have her; to have someone who likes Pixar films, Doctor Who and Harry Dresden as much as I do; who thinks it’s fun to stroll through toy stores, hardware stores, and pawn shops with me; who buys me Lego for my birthday, and actually thinks my weird sense of humour is funny.
Here’s hoping we manage to put up with each other for another nine years.
A few years ago I took an online creative writing course (you can tell, can’t you?). Naturally discussion often turned to books, and at one point someone, on hearing about my love of fantasy, exclaimed, “But then you must have read Stephen Donaldson!”
There was an awkward silence, broken only by the chirping of crickets. (Well, not really. This conversation happened in an online chat forum, and I only saw the message likely hours after it had been posted, but isn’t it just awkward if someone assumes, nay, insists that you’re familiar with something…and you aren’t?)
Never heard of him, was my reply. Oh, the other person came back. You should. You’ll enjoy him.
See? I told you. Awkward.

What? It’s the 25th already? Okay, so I’m a bit later than usual this year, but at least it’s still January. And anyway, everybody knows the Hammerian new year falls on 25 January, so there!
Not buying it, huh? Well you’re welcome to leave.
No, wait! Come back! You know I don’t really mean that. Get a sense of humour, geez!
So, I’ve been thinking about resolutions again lately, and why they’re so damn hard to stick with.

We don’t have Thanksgiving in South Africa. Not even our own version like the Canadians do. And roasting an entire turkey is a bit unheard of – they don’t fit in most braai’s, and anyway would take way too much charcoal. We just go all in and roast and entire cow if the occasion calls for it.
Wait. That’s not what I wanted to write about.
