A Ghost Story

As you will see from the widget on the homepage I’ve made a fair amount of progress on my novel since my previous post two days ago, but I’m still behind and today has been a waste.  I’ve only managed five hundred words and I’m almost certain they’re not going to survive long enough to make the second draft.  At least my stats page now predicts my novel (or the first 50k) will still be completed this year, which gives me hope, kind off.

Sadly, I’ll also be missing tomorrow’s Writing Marathon as I’m again attending a workshop, this time in counselling traumatised children.  Maybe I’ll grab a six pack of Red Bull on the way home and join the marathon in the virtual sphere as it starts in the US.  I’ll see.

I know I’ve been neglecting the blog as well, not delivering the stellar content that you, my dear readers, have grown used to.  Deal with it.  I’m writing a novel here.  However, I will give you a little something to make up for it: an extract from my brand new novel.  Keep in mind, it’s only a first draft, so it still needs a lot of work.  You can also read a brief synopsis of the novel if you visit my NaNo author page.  Then come back here and tell me what you think of the story.

NaNoWriMo thus far

NaNoWriMo thus far

I must say, my NaNoWriMo has gotten off to a very slow start.  As previously mentioned, last week I attended a workshop on Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR for short, but more on that later), followed by a weekend at my dad’s, so in the first couple of days I only managed to squeeze out just shy of 400 words.  Sunday and Monday were filled with family drama and I only got round to really writing yesterday.  Even then it was slow going and I didn’t even meet my quota for one day.

Screenshot - NaNoWriMo stats pageWhen I updated my word count before bed last night the site informed me that at my current rate I’ll finish my 50k by 20 March next year.  So far today I’ve managed to whittle that down to 4 March.  I need to speed things up.

You can help.

Song Title Challenge #23: Sunday, Bloody Sunday – U2

It’s time for this week’s Song Title Challenge.

Write a short piece of fiction, around 300 words, using the song title as your story title but don’t listen to the song.  You can pick your own genre or use the one suggested to me.  Remember to link back to this post so I can find yours.

If you would like to suggest a song title for a future post, you can do so from the challenge page.  You can also leave a suggestion on the Facebook page.

This week’s song is Sunday, Bloody Sunday by U2 and the genre is Horror/Thriller.  Thanks to poemcollision for the suggestion.

Happy Blogaversary to me

A little orange trophy just informed me that I’ve been a WordPress user for one year now, and I just thought I’d quickly share that before turning in.

If you go back through my archives (which I wouldn’t advise) you’ll notice the first post is dated somewhere in March last year, but those first few posts were merely imported from Blogger where I had my first attempt at blogging.  My first post on WordPress was actually only on 13 November last year, and not on this blog (though I reposted it here later).  The first actual post on if all else fails…use a hammer was only on 16 November (though I wouldn’t advise reading it either).

Still, it has now been a whole year that I’ve been on WordPress.  In that year I’ve brought you about hundred-and-seventy posts, including twenty-two Song Title Challenges, eleven reviews (seven books; four movies), vacation photos, puppets, silliness and seriousness.  I’ve passed both the hundred-followers and hundred-posts milestones and made quite a few new friends from all across the world.  I’ve watched the world map on my stats-page fill up with colour as more and more flags were added to my collection (including the only non-rectangular national flag in the world) and I can only hope that by this time next year I’ll have them all.

I must confess, at first I didn’t expect to enjoy blogging this much, but in this year it has become such a part of me that I don’t know if I’d be able to give it up if necessary.

To my regular followers, thanks for sticking with me so far.  I hope to keep giving you reasons to do so.

You may now congratulate me 😉

P.S.  If you haven’t yet, go download Issue 4 of The Paperbook Collective right now where you’ll find an original piece of never-seen-before flash fiction by yours truly (that’s me) on page 5.  Then come on back here and tell me what you think, okay?  (P.P.S.  It’s my first ever piece of published fiction outside of blogging.)

Have a great week.

Happy NaNoWriMo

Happy NaNoWriMo

Today is the official start of National Novel Writing Month.  My trauma counselling course ended yesterday and the wife and I are spending the weekend at our in-laws (both her parents and my dad and stepmom live in the same town, yet we met 1500km away and only after my folks had already been living there for three years), so I probably won’t get much writing done.  But today I’m sitting next to the pool with the laptop and am planning to make a decent go of it before the wife joins me here this afternoon.

In the meantime, may your NaNoWriMo not be characterised by moments such as this…
