On storms and songs

Hey, today’s title sounds like it could fit on the cover of a George RR Martin novel, doesn’t it?

We have a bit of a storm building up today.  We’ve had several good storms this week, and if I say ‘storm’ I mean severe lightning storms with gale-force winds, rain falling so fast you get drenched stepping out of your car to under the umbrella, and sometimes hail stones the size of pigeon eggs (one or two places have had storms in the past few weeks where the hail stones reached the size of cricket balls).

While it might sound a bit extreme, it’s the type of weather I grew up with.  It’s how the weather is supposed to be here at this time of year, which is very good.  The past two rainy seasons we’ve had way below average rainfall, so we’re due for a good soaking.  Living next to a river it does lead to some stress, for if it overflows its banks we have to move our cars as our access road then becomes submerged and the river has even pushed up into our parking area on occasion.  On the other hand, thanks to the stormy weather the wife lies very close to me at night – she’s almost as afraid of thunder as she is of heights 😉

NaNo is going well.  I’m moving the characters to the second setting of the story and introducing a few new ones, so it’s going more slowly than I would like, but I’m steadily catching up and hope to be ahead by the end of the weekend.  But as promised I’ll take a break tomorrow to bring you that review of Jim Butcher’s Side Jobs – my first foray into the world of Harry Dresden.

But what I really want to get to:  I woke up this morning with a song in my head and I’d thought I’d share it with you.  This is one of those songs that made me cry the first time I heard it and every time since.  Enjoy a great song by a great performer.

(By the way, thank goodness the seventies are over.  I don’t think I’d have made it if I had to wear pants like those…)

Song Title Challenge #24: Crosseyed and Painless – Talking Heads

It’s time for this week’s Song Title Challenge.

Write a short piece of fiction, around 300 words, using the song title as your story title but don’t listen to the song.  You can pick your own genre or use the one suggested to me.  Remember to link back to this post so I can find yours.

If you would like to suggest a song title for a future post, you can do so from the challenge page.  You can also leave a suggestion on the Facebook page.

This week’s song is Crosseyed and Painless by Talking Heads and the genre is Horror/Thriller.  Thanks to bumblepuppies for the suggestion.

On the half-way mark

On the half-way mark

I can’t believe that it’s already the halfway mark of National Novel Writing Month.  While I’m not yet caught up on my words, as you can see from the image below it’s going much better than it did when I had made my last update.

NaNoWriMo stats Day 17

For the past few days I’ve been managing a daily word count of over two thousand words and I’m catching up.  At the moment I’m wrapping up the climax of the first act of my novel after which I’ll have to do a spot of planning again to incorporate the new ideas that have popped into my head while writing the first twenty-two thousand, which will include coming up with names for a couple of new supporting characters, but I don’t foresee any major problems and I hope to be caught up and maybe even ahead by Friday.  (By the way, that’s one horrible run-on sentence I wrote there, isn’t it?  I hope none of them have made it into the novel thus far.) There’s something I need to tell you

There’s something I need to tell you

Friends, readers, random spambots crawling this blog, there’s something I need to tell you.

First, I’m a bit disappointed in you all.  Here I say I have a very important announcement coming up and out of all 164 followers (of which, admittedly, more than a few don’t really exist) only Bumblepuppies cared to take a guess.  Well, I can assure you my wife isn’t pregnant, and neither am I (though that would have been something, wouldn’t it?), but thanks for playing along.

My announcement is bigger than this.  Actually, I’m not sure I should reveal this.  The implications could potentially reverberate across all of space and time.  Oh, well.  Let me just tell you and what will be, will be.  Here goes.

A little extract from the WIP

I had a post planned for today on my experience so far with NaNoWriMo, but unforeseen circumstances stole two hours of writing time and I’m kinda on a roll, so I’m going to postpone that post for later.  In the meantime, here’s an extract from a scene I wrote today.  I’d love to hear what you think.

You should also go check out this post by Ava Jae on how she finished NaNoWriMo in just nine days.  I don’t know about applying her strategy to my own writing, but still…respect!

Oh, and be sure to watch this space on Friday for a VERY IMPORTANT announcement.  Trust me, you’re not gonna want to miss it.

But without further ado, this scene is entitled:
