On re-invention

Wait!  Don’t go.  You’re in the right place.  If all else fails…use a hammer has just had a bit of a makeover.  What do you think?  You like?  It’s not yet permanent.  I’m still experimenting with the new theme and haven’t decided whether I’m keeping it, but it’s growing on me.  In any event, go check out the new About pages while you’re here and let me know what you think.

Why the change?  This has been a good week.  But this past week things have been changing.  I’ve started exercising again (motivated, in part, by the discovery that I had gained six kilograms since April).  I’ve started making progress with my reading for my degree.  I’ve started writing again (okay, so I opened a new document on my pc and stared at the page for half an hour – that’s the most writing I’ve done outside of this blog for months).  I’m just, like the epic song by Nina Simone says, feeling good. On fixing what ain’t broke

I’m human (for those of you who were wondering), and like most humans, I’m not completely comfortable with change.  We like the familiar.  That’s why we invent traditions and customs – to ensure future generations do things the same way as us so that we don’t have to change.

However, along with a significantly smaller proportion of the world’s population, I also recognise the need for change.  As stated previously, without change we run a big risk of stagnating.  Blindly adhering to tradition is usually more damaging than not adhering to tradition at all.

But, and this is a big but, change for the sake of change is pointless, causes unnecessary stress and just makes life difficult. Continue reading “On fixing what ain’t broke”

A New Chapter

Yesterday I joined the ranks of the voluntarily unemployed.  Who’s that, I hear you ask.  Those are the people who have quit their jobs for the sake of chasing their dreams.  They are the people who grew tired of slaving away every day for a pay cheque, slowly losing touch with themselves and everything they love along the way.  They are people who want to try something new, who want to feel alive again, who want to make a contribution, who want to bring change.  I am now one of them. On Change

I’ve always thought myself somewhat of a traditionalist.  I’ve always argued, why change something if it’s working fine?  I used to scorn at people who, in my mind, pushed for renewal and change just for the sake of saying they’re doing it.  I could not see the sense in change simply for the sake of change.  My motto:  If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Thing is, what if it is broke?  It’s like driving with worn tyres.  They seem fine, you never have any problems, until that rainy day when you hit a puddle going 100km/h.  Then you suddenly realise those tyres should have been replaced months ago.  It’s what George Barna refers to as frog-in-the-kettle syndrome.  Please don’t try this at home Continue reading “On Change”

On First Steps

There’s probably nothing as frightening and at the same time as exhilarating as a first step – the knowledge that you are about to do something completely new, that you have never done before.  It’s a truly unique combination of the thrill and the paralysing terror of the unknown.

It makes me thinks of the story in the Bible when Peter walked on water.  I can only imagine what he must have felt.  On the one hand, there’s the thrill of knowing he’s about to do something that no human being has ever done.  On the other, the mind-numbing terror because there’s a very good reason why no human being has ever done that – we sink!
