Time Marches On

And once again I’m a year older today. Funny how that keeps happening, right? This year my birthday is rather special, though.

First, it’s one year to the day since I got the email that changed my life – the email that invited me to interview for a job at Automattic, the company that runs WordPress.com, Jetpack and Woocommerce.

And directly related to that, I’m spending my birthday with my team in Whistler, Canada, where our company is having our annual meetup where all of us come together from across the world. It kinda sucks not to have the wife and kid here with me, but it’s certainly the most exciting way I’ve ever celebrated surviving another year on Earth.

Here’s to the next 35 years 😀

Guess Who…

Guess Who…

Guess Who gameMy wife is awesome.  She claims she sucks at coming up with gift ideas, but lately she has been giving me presents that overflows with awesome to such a degree that I’m hard-pressed to find her anything equally incredible.

Take the present I got when I woke up this morning: Guess Who? is a game she bought back when she was still a youth worker and needed ways to entertain the kids who regularly hung out at her place. It’s basically twenty questions. Each person picks a card with a character on it and then you take turns asking each other yes/no questions to try and figure out who is on the other person’s card before they can figure out yours. It’s the coolest present ever!

Confused? I bet you are. Read on and all will be revealed…

A New Arrival

About an hour ago I became an uncle for the third time. A new baby in the family is always special, but what makes this one extra- special is that it’s my baby sister’s first, it’s the first baby in the family I’m biologically related to, and most importantly, it’s my first nephew! Declan enters the world at a whopping 3.6kg, 51 cm. (If you’ve ever seen my sister you’d understand my use of “whopping”.)

I’d hoped that he would arrive on Tuesday so we could share our birthday, but the doctor had decided not to let nature take its course and yanked him out early. Oh, well. I’ll settle with getting a nephew three days before my birthday and a new season of Doctor Who four days after (I couldn’t let that pass without mention, now could I?)

I don’t believe in putting pictures of children online without their parents’ consent (actually, I’m uncomfortable with putting pictures of children online, period) so you’ll just have to believe me when I say he’s a beautiful little tyke. I can’t wait to go and officially meet him.

Song Title Challenge #64: The Magician’s Birthday by Uriah Heep

It’s time for this week’s Song Title Challenge.

Write a short piece of fiction, around 300 words, using the song title as your story title but don’t listen to the song.  You can pick your own genre or use the one suggested to me.  Remember to link back to this post so I can find yours.

If you would like to suggest a song title for a future post, you can do so from the challenge page.  You can also leave a suggestion on the Facebook page.

As I’m celebrating another year I’ve managed to not join the choir invisible (you can congratulate me in the comments, though if you really want to make my day, take part in today’s challenge) I’ve picked my own song. I googled song titles containing the word “birthday” and settled on The Magician’s Birthday by Uriah Heep. Given the occasion I allowed myself a few extra words.
