A New Arrival

About an hour ago I became an uncle for the third time. A new baby in the family is always special, but what makes this one extra- special is that it’s my baby sister’s first, it’s the first baby in the family I’m biologically related to, and most importantly, it’s my first nephew! Declan enters the world at a whopping 3.6kg, 51 cm. (If you’ve ever seen my sister you’d understand my use of “whopping”.)

I’d hoped that he would arrive on Tuesday so we could share our birthday, but the doctor had decided not to let nature take its course and yanked him out early. Oh, well. I’ll settle with getting a nephew three days before my birthday and a new season of Doctor Who four days after (I couldn’t let that pass without mention, now could I?)

I don’t believe in putting pictures of children online without their parents’ consent (actually, I’m uncomfortable with putting pictures of children online, period) so you’ll just have to believe me when I say he’s a beautiful little tyke. I can’t wait to go and officially meet him.

On learning to type

On learning to type

Of all the subjects I took in school, none were so useful as typing, which I took in the ninth grade. My taking it was actually a happy accident: our school had both an academic and a technical track, and had I taken technical drawing as I’d intended I would have wound up in a class with the students taking the latter, with the result that I would have had, let us say, less experienced and less able teachers for key subjects such as Science and Maths.

As I was a straight-A student this was less than desirable, and between the principal and my mother I was convinced to switch. While I had really enjoyed technical drawing, I have never regretted the choice, though, as it’s the only one of my high school subjects (besides languages) that I still use on a daily basis. I can crank out a respectable sixty to seventy words a minute if I know what I want to write (knowing what to write about is a whole different problem…)

I had heard of alternate keyboard layouts to the standard QWERTY before, but did not think going to the trouble of learning one was worth the effort. Then Thursday, on a whim, I decided to give Colemak a try (because learning all things JavaScript is not already enough of a challenge).

Holy Stats, Batman! This is insane

I’m not one to obsess over my stats. I can go for weeks without even looking at my stats page. But I was pretty pleased when my August stats showed an average view for the month of 37, the highest yet on if all else fails… I had no idea what was coming.

The past three days have seen my stats climb to 171, 198, and 197 so far today. At the current rate it will pass 200 views before midnight. (Correction, it passed the 200-mark while I was writing this and it now stands at 201 views.)

A Springtime Refresh

A Springtime Refresh

The first day of spring has always felt like a holiday to me. Not a stay-away-from-work holiday, but a special day that deserves to be celebrated. And this September first is worthy of celebration indeed. It has been warming up over here for the past two weeks, so much so that we’ve been sleeping with the window open, the better to enjoy the chirping and croaking of seemingly hundreds of frogs that had woken from hibernation early.

But my favourite part is when, apparently overnight, almost without one noticing, everything suddenly erupts in the most beautiful and varied shades of green. Spring is a time of new life. It’s time of new beginnings, at least for me, much more than New Year’s is.
